The thaw comes late, but it's blooming wonderful

The coldest December in a century has delayed the start of spring for the second year running, wildlife experts say.

The first signs that winter is coming to an end - such as the fluttering of red admiral butterflies, the appearance of frog spawn and the nesting of rooks - are two weeks late, according to the Woodland Trust.

However, the sub zero conditions at the end of 2010 have triggered one of the most spectacular displays of snowdrops in years, with thick carpets of white blanketing woodlands and gardens.
